It is very important that you have an understanding of which exercises recruit which muscles/muscle groups. Knowing exactly which muscles you are working ensures you are mentally feeling the contraction, performing the exercise correctly and preventing injury.

The mind muscle connection is the feeling of the positive and negative contraction of the muscle you are working. The stronger the contraction the better the muscle will be worked. The mind muscle connection is one of the most important things to consider when aiming for hypertrophy.

Knowing your muscle anatomy will enable you to focus on specific areas that you want to improve. If you want to increase your sprint, you know that you will want to focus on training your calves, glutes, hamstrings, quads and hip flexors. If you want to create that v taper look - it might be that you want to focus on your shoulders, chest and lats to create size on the upper V.
